Ready to Move?
Ready to Move? Use a Checklist.
Whether you’re a renter, first-time homebuyer or have decided it’s time to move up or downsize this list will help guide you through some of the necessary preparations. Regardless of which option applies to you it will require a lot of moving parts and details to manage. Avoid the frustration of forgetting something, use a checklist. We’ve provided one here!
Looking to Rent
Rental properties typically have utilities in place, but you’ll need to remember to transfer the account (depending upon your rental agreement) into your name. Also, schedule the connection or transfer of your Internet, cable provider and change of address. A change of address can be done quickly online at your convenience. It’s best to schedule these things approximately two weeks in advance to avoid and lapses in service.
Before you’ve officially taken possession of the new place, conduct your own inspection prior to moving in. A quick, but thorough walk-thru to make sure the property is in acceptable condition can save you money in the future. Be sure to identify any questionable items you may notice and document for future reference – it’s best to conduct this step with the property manager, if possible.
Buying a Home
ALWAYS purchase a home warranty! Don’t sour the excitement of purchasing a new home with an unexpected expense, protect your investment with a home warranty to cover the costs of unforeseen repairs.
If you’re fortunate enough to have a few days after closing before you need to move in, take advantage of your empty space by completing any to-do items you may have generated for your new home during the buying process: a deep and thorough cleaning, replacing/cleaning carpets, new paint, and so forth. Moving into a clean home provides the peace of mind you don’t need to wipe down surfaces prior to displaying your possessions. We can help schedule and coordinate these things for you should you elect to retain the services of certified professionals to complete some or all of these items before you move into your new home.
Selling and Moving Up
Review the content written thus far and add those items to your to-do list! Organization is the key to a successful and minimally stress-free move.
Remember, this does not mean every detail must exude perfection and it’s okay to allow “good enough” to be synonymous with perfection. In lieu of agonizing over all the little things, compile your to-do list as best you can and celebrate the excitement of moving into a new home. Imagine all the exciting things you can do to make the new space a reflection of you.
